🌳 How to start your family history
1. Start with the livingCall the oldest relatives first. Ask for full names, maiden names, towns and villages, and the year people arrived. Record the call if they agree.
2. Write down the village, not just the countryRecords back home are kept by town, parish or district. "Avellino province" gets you much further than "Italy".
3. Collect the paper you already haveOld passports, ship tickets, naturalization certificates, church records, letters and the backs of photos are full of names and dates.
4. Expect spellings to changeNames were often written down differently at arrival and over the years. Search for every spelling you can think of.
5. Ask your communityPost a Roots question with the surname and town. Someone may come from the same village, or know where its records are kept.
